Gluten Free Conditioner
Like many other skin care and hair care products, many hair conditioners will often contain gluten based ingredients that can cause irritation and potentially more serious health issues to anyone with Celiac disease or sensitivity to gluten. Gluten is a protein that is typically found in a number of different grains including wheat, rye, and barley. When someone with Celiac disease or heightened sensitivity to gluten is exposed to gluten via either ingestion or absorption through the skin, it can trigger a reaction in the intestine causes the body to attack itself–and with prolonged exposure can lead to more severe health problems.
Non-ingestable products that contain gluten are often overlooked by many individuals who might follow a gluten-free diet. However, gluten that is absorbed into the body though the skin poses nearly the same threat as eating gluten foods. Thus, great care should be taken to check the ingredients lists on those hair care products that people commonly stock their bathrooms with.
Most products on today’s store shelves will often have a visible label that would indicate that the product is gluten free. As with gluten free shampoos, gluten free conditioners are increasingly more available and easier to find than ever before due to increased demand.
If the bottles don’t clearly specify whether it is gluten free or not, then check the ingredients label for possible ingredients that might contain gluten. Some natural conditioners have easy to spot gluten based ingredients. These include:
- Wheat
- Barley
- Rye
- Most types of coloring agents
- Oats (via cross contamination)
Though some conditions will have chemicals that contain gluten like Hydrolized Wheat Protien. Most of these can easily be spotted because they usually contain the word gluten or wheat in the name of the chemical compound.
