Gluten Free Lotion
For anyone with Celiac Disease or high sensitivity to foods and other products that contain gluten it can be a challenge to find alternatives that are gluten-free. Celiac disease is a condition where digestive system has a difficult time processing gluten which is a protein found in a variety of different common grains including wheat, barley, and rye. However the sensitivity to gluten also extends to any gluten that is absorbed into the body through the skin from various cosmetics and body care products that are commonly used.
Body lotions are no exception. Fortunately, finding gluten free lotions is a much easier process than it used to be several years ago due to increased awareness and demand. Most lotion bottle labels will usually clearly and boldly state if they are gluten free. If not, you should probably assume that they contain gluten until you check the ingredients label and verify either way.
Finding out whether a lotion contains gluten ingredients is relatively straight forward, especially with products that predominately use natural ingredients rather than harder to pronounce chemicals. Anyone who has Celiac should have a list of gluten ingredients to avoid within easy reach. Though some of the common basics include:
- Rye
- Wheat
- Barley
- Most coloring agents
Certain grains like oats don’t contain any gluten within them, but are commonly cross contaminated with wheat or another gluten grain as they are usually handled and packaged in the same facility.
